Financial Security

Until July 2014, Australian consumers were protected by the Travel Agents Act and the Travel Compensation Fund, which ensured a refund of the consumer’s money in the case of a travel agent’s insolvency. In 2014, the Travel Agents Act was repealed, and it is no longer necessary for an Australian travel agent to hold a licence to operate.

Shortly following the closure of the Travel Compensation Fund, the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA), the principal national industry body representing travel agents, launched the ATAS accreditation scheme. The voluntary AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS) ensures that participating agents meet a number of criteria; including annual financial checks, suitable insurance policies, minimum levels of training and customer service, compliance with Australian Consumer Law and compliance with the ATAS Code of Conduct. ATAS accreditation is an indication of quality and reliability, and is a sign of a reputable travel agent.

As a member of AFTA (member number: 13971), Llama Travel’s financial records are monitored, and our accreditation with ATAS is an assurance of our strong financial position.
